What is Skills on Site?

Skills on Site (SonS) is a CWIC initiative designed to provide interesting and engaging ‘live, on-site’ learning opportunities for students of all ages to support classroom teaching.

Launched in 2017 it is supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

How does it work?

To recognise commitment towards this initiative CWIC creates a Memorandum of Understanding which the host company signs with us.  Each SonS visit is then organised by, Huw Thomas, CWIC’s SonS Co-ordinator, following mutually agreed objectives and a discussion about the company‘s ongoing programme and identification of areas that can be used for teaching purposes.

CWIC is able to provide the school or college with funding to cover the costs of organising a visit up to the value of £500 (u until the end of August 2019)

What are the benefits?

For students:  it’s an opportunity to get a real idea of what a construction site is like and to talk to contractors about the work they do – warts and all.

For industry (employers):  it’s good to meet with potential employees and contributes to the company’s community benefit outputs.

It helps support the industry to be able to open up their sites as learning zones.
