UWTSD has welcomed its first cohort of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Degree Apprentices to the University’s IQ building in SA1.
The Degree Apprenticeship is a new type of award which combines the workplace learning of a traditional apprenticeship with a higher education qualification.
The University has a demonstrable record for an industry-related portfolio linked to the national upskilling agenda and aimed at delivering economic, social and cultural value to Wales. During the past two years it has witnessed a significant growth in our work-based learning portfolio, in particular in relation to Welsh Government-funded Degree Apprenticeships. Working in collaboration with other providers has also enabled the University to include Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Human Resources and Policing to the range of Degree and Higher Level Apprenticeships offered through the UWTSD Group.
The University has worked closely with employers to develop high-quality programmes that meet key skills needs, fill occupations that are experiencing shortages and deliver them in an innovative and flexible way. A Degree Apprenticeship provides opportunities for employers to recruit talented staff with potential, and to develop and upskill their existing employees.
Barry Liles, OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Skills & Lifelong Learning at UWTSD said: “The University is so pleased to witness the tremendous uptake of places on the new Welsh Government sponsored Degree Apprenticeship programmes. The support afforded by employers from across South Wales is testament to the acute need for this level of apprenticeship and the value provided to employers for their investment in degree apprentices. The University looks forward to broadening the range of sectors where Degree Apprenticeship programmes can be offered, to include other sectors of importance to the Welsh economy such as construction and care for example. The programmes are unique in enabling direct access at Degree level whilst also, importantly, enabling progression from Apprenticeship and Higher Apprenticeship programmes.”
Bridget Moseley, Head of UWTSD’s Apprenticeship Unit said: “This is a really exciting week for me – to see so many people starting higher level Apprenticeship programmes in the University is realising the vision of many years of work. These programmes are exactly what employers and Apprentices have been asking for, to provide them with the higher level transferable skills and abilities that undergraduate learning and development will give.”
This programme provides an ideal progression opportunity for Apprentices, the programme runs over 4 years with off-the-job training taking place on a day release basis in the University’s IQ Building on the new SA1 Campus. Prior learning will enable Apprentices to enter the programme at an appropriate point to meet their individual requirements. Apprentices will be supported throughout their programme by an Apprenticeship Liaison Officer, who will visit the workplace regularly, providing the link between the academic studies and workplace learning, and addressing any issues that may arise during the programme.
